Bringing out the jologs in me

November 25, 2007

All this time I always thought that Filipino romantic movies are corny, trite, and unoriginal…overall crappy.

I really can’t believe how such a crappy movie made me cry. I shed no tears yet I felt my heart was throbbing in pain.

Crying over a movie isn’t new to me. A few films and some books actually did make me cry - to name some are: Forrest Gump (my all time favorite), The Notebook (movie), Dead Poets Society, The Lion King (When I was a kid, I cried when Mufasa died), Harry Potter - GOF (when Cedric died, both movie and book), Homeward Bound (Damn, I have a soft heart for animals, especially dogs), Tuesdays with Morrie (book) and some short clips/stories stated on my other post.

But NOT one Filipino movie ever made me cry; not even close to have me teary-eyed. Filipino films are mostly unoriginal, ripped or just inspired from some Hollywood movies, the storyline is very common, and the plot is always predictable, plus most Filipino romantic films lack depth… that’s why NONE HAS EVER HIT ME.

But this film, starred by the known Philippine showbiz love tandem I’m not even a fan of was able to cut through my eyes. My eyes almost burst, but I was trying to hold back my tears because my boyfriend was with me; I know he’s going to tease me about being corny. The astig Sarah most people know suddenly turned squashy mushy. Waaaa! Ang jologs ko. Nakakahiya! Dang! This effin crappy film GOT ME!

Fine, I admit it wasn’t crappy. It wasn’t typical. It was totally different from any other Filipino romantic films. The movie is pretty good. Albeit there are some minor flaws in technicalities, overall the movie is good. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me ponder for a while. It’s so far the best Filipino romantic movie I’ve ever seen in my entire life. All others are honestly hackneyed, predictable, common, and shallow - pardon me for being forthright.

Kudos to the brilliant director and scriptwriters, the outstanding performances of the casts, the crew and everyone who is behind the success of the film. The movie was sure a hit.

Well at last, the Philippine cinema industry was able to prove that Filipino movies can be after all deserving of a perfect ten rating. Therefore, I’m giving our Filipino films one more chance after proving their worth. Here I am, standing and speaking with pride, tangkilikin natin ang sariling atin. Baduy na kung baduy, I couldn’t care less. We are Filipinos; as citizens who are living in a third world country, we are entitled to some form of kabaduyan, right?

Comparing Pinoy films from Hollywood is definitely inevitable . And I know Hollywood films are indisputably the most awaited, most viewed, and the most admired. But not everything in Hollywood spells g-o-o-d. Sometimes we just have to look around to realize that the films our country has to offer are way better than the bold letters that appear on the hills of Los Angeles CA.

So come on guys, let’s all be proud of the unseen beautiful movies our country has to present. Kasi sa totoo lang, gusto naman natin eh, pero nahihiya lang tayo. Wag na tayong mahiya manood ng Pinoy romantic movies. Ipagmalaki natin ang mga pelikulang tatak pinoy!

Jologs ba kamo? Eh ano ngayon? Pinoy ako eh!
